In his SOUTH CENTRAL AND BERLIN exhibition at Kominek Gallery (Berlin), Mark Steinmetz combines work from his classic series South Central with photographs from a new project he is currently working on in Berlin. The exhibition will feature prints that Steinmetz has become famous for, informal portraits of Southerners whom we encounter in medias res—in the middle of moments that always suggest a story. Made in the early ‘90s, South Central offers viewers a timeless summer world in which people search for, and often find, belonging.
The rare narrative quality of Mark Steinmetz’s photography is also found in his Berlin-based project. Steinmetz has created a refreshing perspective on Berlin in springtime, uniting still lifes and candid photos, landscapes and portraits. The result is a fascinating city, recognizable and at the same time unburdened by narrow visual tropes.
Taken together, SOUTH CENTRAL AND BERLIN is a show that coheres around themes of connection, youth, love, and the everyday encounters his subjects face as they go about their day. The different settings of the work both provide abundant proof of the grace of black and white photography. Join Mark Steinmetz at the opening of the exhibition on Saturday 29th of June at Kominek Gallery.
